12:54 pm – kitchen. Forgot to take any pictures at school, but canned pumpkin is far more exciting. Also it looks gross. Also it got turned into something delicious.

4:06 pm – work. Got called in to work after school because my coworker Jess is sick and Other Kerry [which is what I call her; also known as “Kerry-with-a-Y” and just “Kerry” whereas I get called “Little Kerri”] is in Mexico!  Played NHL Monopoly for an hour . . . my job is hard.

4:26 pm – work. I owned the Flames for a bit [I traded them], and the Leafs [the second best property, ironically. Yes, I do love them.] for the whole game.

8:40 pm – bathroom. My friend Mike does Mirror Mantras every Monday to fuel him through the week, which I have always loved. So this week, I decided to join in!  I figured my mom was going to take it down as soon as she went into the bathroom, but she actually liked it!

11:39 pm – kitchen. I have two presentations tomorrow – one on the overhand throw [honestly], and one is group teaching 6 and 7 year olds [aka our classmates pretending to be 6+7 year olds] to dribble a basketball.  We are playing a music game, so I did some fun GarageBand stuff for one of the games in our lesson!  [Kin win? I think so]

A couple weeks ago, my friend Sara celebrated her birthday. Sara is an absolutely amazing woman, so why should her birthday be any different than amazing?

It shouldn’t, of course!  For her birthday, all Sara wanted was to fill her day with random acts of kindness, and receive stories of the same from her friends near and far.  So, here is my present to her:

The next Monday I took some post it’s to school with me.  And obviously it is kind of hard to be stealth in the university so as to be mysterious and whatnot while leaving positive post-its around.  So [shh, I am giving away rockin’ the RAOK secrets here!] I started leaving post-its in the bathroom.  This was the first one:

This one, the next day I went into the same stall and realized that it was missing.  So, I replaced it with a new one. But . . .  turns out somebody took off the inside of the door and stuck on the mirror, which is so freaking awesome!  Here is the second one, which somebody then ADDED TO!!

That? That was so amazing. [I didn’t get a picture, I’d left my backpack with my iPod in it with a friend, and my Blackberry makes an awkward camera noise, and the bathroom wasn’t loud enough to be able to deal with the loud clicky noise stealthily].

I gave this one to my friend Bobbi-Jo, who pulled it out again today as we were crushing some last minute studying for our Physical Growth and Motor Development midterm in [three midterms in 36 hours is absolutely no fun. To top it off, I had a huge stress-out moment this morning when I left work, my bus came early, I saw it drive past as I was walking down the street, and knew that the next bus did not come until 9:43 and my Program Planning in Sport midterm was at 10 and 45+ minutes away. Fortunately, my mom came all the way from the university and picked me up and drove me back (yay mom!), I made it to my midterm in time, and studied in a bus shack. YES!  By the time I got in the car I was still freaking out on whether I would get there in time, and then rocked some progressive muscle relaxation stuff while driving through the French quarter . . . thank you grade-one-PE and Issues in Health.  So yes, crazy day from the get go following noodle hockey.  Oh and guess what? Neither exam sucked. Or yesterday’s. YES!]

Weightless, Nada Surf

About a month ago, my friends and I went wall climbing.  It is an awesome climbing gym, and we’re planning on going again sometime in the near future.  My friend Dan and I are big into incorporating DOING something into our get-togethers.  While eating is doing something, and we usually do that after, we kind of like getting something to be active about before we eat a bunch of food.  So we play ice hockey or ball hockey . . . or go climbing!

(On that note, at about 11:30 every night, my Fitbit tells me to CLIMB IT. And I tell it “Chill, I am going to bed”.)

Climbing is not an activity I am exactly good at [okay, let’s face it: I am the girl with the proficiency barrier. I do not move skillfully in the majority of regards].  But I really enjoy it, and not only is it a really good workout and my lungs are pretty okay with it–I really enjoy the aspect of being able to exercise AND breathe well at the same time, but I think there is a thrill in it and an amazing high associated with it [literally and figuratively] that is very unique–at least that is what I experience [I am pretty high on life in all regards . . . no drugs needed . . . but sometimes I just get REALLY stoked about things!].  Before the climbing event, the last time I climbed was in grade 12 PE, so it was due time I got up there again!  So, not only do I go out of my way to organize these sorts of crazy climbing events, I totally try to climb whenever I get the chance!  [This is probably totally the fault of my friend Steve at Living Vertical, who is climbing every day in 2012–props, dude! He is full of motivating, and he and his wife Stefanie are full of awesome in all they are doing!]

Tonight, our church’s youth event was to tour a new youth centre and try out their activities, such as an indoor skate park, a gym for basketball and volleyball and stuff, video games, and . . . a climbing wall!  So, of course, I was encouraging the girls in the small group I was leading to get up there!  And, of course, leading by example is the way to go, right?

It. Was. Awesome.

The past is important in telling our stories, to understand where we’re at and why we’re there.

But tonight, I am not celebrating what’s ending . . . i am celebrating what is coming.  I don’t “do” new year’s resolutions, because a resolution is simply a goal–and goals need to be set and re-set frequently to make progress.

Today I closed off 2011 with my friend and former coworker, Sara, just one of many amazing people I experienced the joy of meeting in 2011.  We ate too many crepes and had an amazing time, and were ironically wearing the same Hollister hoodie in different colours, pink t-shirts underneath and brown jackets!  [I took mine off for the picture].

After making a final pharmacy trip for the year (gotta love breathing, yeah?), I came home to do a final workout to hit 800 kilometers for 2011.  To give some perspective on how much I’ve grown in regard to exercise and fitness in 2011, my total on December 31st, 2010 was a tiny 100 kilometers [which was upped to a legitimate 106 as I found later on that I had forgotten to count an April race in there].

That. Is. Huge.  The big change in 2011 came in September through the amazingness that was Physical Activity: Promotion and Adherence, definitely my favourite university class thus far, and really gaining the understanding that the SMALL things make a BIG difference!  Though an unintentional success attributed to making small changes and regulating physical activity, since mid-September [at my highest ever weight which may have been some sort of weird fluke] I have lost a total of 17 pounds.  I can’t say I felt “bad” before or anything, but comparatively, I feel totally awesome both physically and emotionally with the GOOD changes that have happened!

I’ve walked 213 km, stationary biked 143, and racked up hundreds of kilometers in commutes. I walked one race, went on a few short hikes, went on an adventure rock climbing this past week.  I played hockey both in my skates and in my Sauconies and skated down rivers.  I’ve played in concrete jungles and playgrounds.  This has been the most active year of my life, and I plan to strip that title away from 2011 and give it to 2012.

This year, I have reached farther than I thought I could, pushed my lungs and my body in bigger ways.  I started thinking about things differently, relationships changed and growing happened.  I did things I couldn’t believe I would or could succeed at.  
I got a new job at an amazing daycare.  I worked one-on-one at camp for a week, which was one of the biggest challenges and biggest joys simultaneously.  I have met so many amazing people in “real life” and online.  One of my best guy friends for a time became my first boyfriend and even though it mutually didn’t work out, it definitely did not damage our friendship, which was the most important thing to us.  I returned to Chicago.  I watched one of the girls I do inclusion with grow so much in where she’s at, while simultaneously realizing the growth in myself through her.  I have fallen more and more in love with the subject that is applied health.  I have changed my perspectives on health advocacy, become more involved, and continued to learn how to OWN my asthma and encourage others to do the same.  I have learned to better live with what I’ve been handed.  I have learned more deeply that health and wellness is a choice.  I have learned to see things differently, engage differently, and not just make goals, but meet goals and ENGAGE in these goals to use them as learning experiences.

I want to continue that next year.  Continue moving forward, continue proving myself wrong, continuing to grow and learn and thrive, not simply survive.

There is more goodness coming.  There is a year of hope, joy, change, growth, learning, and love ahead.

Bring it on 2012. GOOD THINGS!

Last week, I Facebooked [Faceboked? Well, if my Education prof in first year made “Amazoned” a verb, I suppose I can do the same for Facebooked] about gym game issues.  As in, issues finding gym games that don’t suck.

Yeah, there are a lot of gym games that suck out there.  It’s ridiculous.

So I got everybody to tell me their favourite gym games.  A lot of people really like dodgeball, apparently.  I hated dodgeball.  The only time I ever sort of liked that game was in middle school that time that Sam and I spun in circles and didn’t get hit until the very end of the game.  I think people thought we probably weren’t playing or something.

Anyway, a week or so before I’d met up with my friend Dia when she was here for BUSINESS TRAVEL!  Dia and I connected through my blog awhile back [I believe that’s what it was] — she’s got not only a Bachelor’s of Kinesiology, but a MASTERS as well.  So we had all kinds of nerdiness to discuss, it was awesome.  She works for Special Olympics Ontario, so we share this epic love for adapted physical activity and she’s full of resources and research articles that she sends me sometimes, and stuff like that.  We had coffee and it was awesome.

So, back on the subject of gym games, Dia dropped me an e-mail, and the next day, a gigantic package arrived in my mailbox [or maybe in my door.  It may have been too big for my mailbox].  Holy amazing.

So not only that, but I’m totally spoiled.  She also sent me TORONTO CHOCOLATE.  To add to that, she also gave me Toronto chocolate when we met up when she was here.  How sweet is that?

Seriously.  If there was ever a food that was a party in your mouth with everyone invited [a la Moe Szyslack] it would be Toronto chocolate with Pop Rocks and hazelnut.  Thanks Dia!

On the subject of kinesiology [okay, the story about chocolate was sort of about kinesiology in a roundabout way], I’m in this class called Physical Activity and Aging.  As part of the course requirements, we have to complete an eight-hour practicum with seniors who are exercising.

You know what’s difficult about that?  Seniors exercise during the day.  Because when do seniors have free time?  During the day.  During the evening they are full of visiting their kids who work during the day, and hanging out at home, and going to bed early.  Or at least that is my understanding.  Maybe the people who work with seniors who want to exercise are just all “Hey, they have free time during the day, I can have a 9-5 job now.” and affect the socialization and exercise hours of seniors that way, I don’t know.  And what do I do during the day?  I go to school and I work and I attempt to get some of that awesome thing called exercise worked into my day myself.

So I finally got my practicum arranged at a senior’s apartment complex.  T, the therapeutic recreation coordinator, is awesomesauce helping me figure out when my practicum fits with my schedule AND theirs.  She is SO stoked about my practicum, it’s awesome.  I’ve met the woman once and she’s officially FULL OF AWESOME.

I went to what the schedule calls Exercise Tape today.  Originally i thought that meant Exercise VIDEO Tape.

It didn’t.  It meant Exercise CASSETTE tape.  It went on for half an hour and I observed and took about five lines of notes, and it was INCREDIBLY boring.  It was chair exercises.  Which, I mean, that’s awesome.  If that’s how the senior exercise boat floats, then that’s cool.  They do it every morning.  And they are all serious while doing it, or something, because there is no social involved.  Which is something I’d like to observe, since apparently having social support helps people adhere to exercise programs.  [There were seven people there today. Sometimes there’s two, and sometimes there’s fifteen.  Just how the exercise boat floats.]

Here’s the problem though.  It was half an hour, which means to make it work into my schedule on the two days a week I can go at 9:30 am . . . I have to do it for eight weeks.  And this thing is due November 23rd.  So no bueno on that.

T and I sat down and hashed it out. She was determined to make this work for me.  Super awesome woman, as I said about three paragraphs ago.  We got it set up.  I’m going for Ladder Golf the next four Wednesdays and Bocce Ball the next four Saturdays.  One O’Clock Games.  It’s gonna be awesome.  The tenants I met today were super friendly, and I’m sure they’re gonna kick my butt at these target games [TGfU model FTW].

 

Oh, I’d also like to mention within the span of less than two hours, I went form watching kids play floor hockey to watching seniors work out.  I also walked 4K today and am going to the gym tomorrow. I got this kinesiology thing down.
